Material in the spot market has been comparatively scarce, market participants said, as at least some producers have reported that they have sold out for the year, while demand has continued to be solid.

One deal was reportedly concluded below $25 per kg on Wednesday, but most business was comfortably above this level, pushing Metal Bulletin’s quotation up to $25-25.40 per kg.

There are at least three enquiries still in the market, a distributor added, including one full truckload.

It is possible, furthermore, that some consumers will look to buy now to meet their January requirements in an attempt to avoid the usual price rises in the New Year.

A producer added that there have been indications from China at $27 per kg, although it is not clear when or if this price level will filter through to the European market.
